Globa 'loss' ation Exhibition- April 2010

Brick by Brick (2010)

This group exhibition and in particular my piece focuses on the notion that the economy can crash in seconds. The idea behind my work comes from the association between the economy and receipts. Customers leave a shop with paper evidence of their consumerism I.e. the receipt. The obvious link between receipts and the economy was of great interest, in particular the irony of the receipt. Suggestive of disposability and lack of worth, the receipt in fact is a product of money and income. The sculpture I created for this exhibition was based on a Jenga tower, the idea of Jenga being that it is manipulated, built upon, weakened and inevitably collapses. This jenga tower of recipts is a reflection of the economy, forever being manipulated and built upon through globalisation. However, a series of small errors bring the economy crashing down.
