Artist Statement

My work cannot be categorised as either low or high art.
I make use of needlework by embroidering with strips of paint or knitting with paint. Utilising needlework with paint, paint being historically associated with high art, thrusts needlework into a male dominated discipline. Using needlework to paint, and paint to produce needlework forces a re-contextualisation of the aesthetic hierarchies existent within contemporary art practice.
The aesthetic hierarchy suggests that needlework connotes femininity and domesticity therefore needlework occupies a ‘low‘ aesthetic value. My work challenges the categorisations and hierarchical labels of ‘low’ and ‘high’ art through knitting and embroidery with paint.
